Stitt is one of the Southeast’s most visible and dedicated advocates for improving the public’s health through increasing the use of locally grown healthy foods and encouraging the expansion of the Slow Food Movement into Birmingham and the US. At a time when the obesity epidemic has gained national attention, his work and dedication moves beyond the successes as an Executive Chef and entrepreneur to showing us how to enjoy healthy foods for our personal benefit and how to use the occasion of eating to create a healthier community around us. His efforts have awakened us to the importance of food and eating as an unrecognized social determinant of health. These efforts are as important to modern day public health as was Lou Wooster’s feeding and cleaning those sickened with cholera. E
