Sexual Health and the Sexual History:  Asking the Tough Questions
Thursday, June 7, 2012    12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Faculty: Nick Van Wagoner, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Discussion:
Obtaining an accurate and in depth sexual history is difficult in clinical practice.  However, sexual health is central to the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.  In this seminar, we will discuss the rationale for taking a sexual history and provide skills to efficiently and effectively communicate with your patients about their sexuality, sexual behavior, and sexual health risk.

Objectives:  By the end of the lecture, the participant will be able to:
1.    Discuss the rationale for obtaining a good sexual history.
2.    Identify the key components of the sexual history.
3.    Practice techniques that foster patient trust and communication.
4.    Ask effective questions related to sexual health.
