The South Central Public Health Training Center (SCPHTC) was developed in response to the pressing need for a comprehensive, regional approach to workforce development and is one of fourteen Public Health Training Centers across the United States funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Internet-based courses offered by the SCPHTC focus on core public health functions and essential services. Courses are developed by experienced faculty from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.

Videos and other training sessions may be taken as a one-time learning experience or as part of a training series. Courses are developed based on regional-training needs and are designed to address the core public health competencies produced by the Council on Linkages, a nationally recognized council dedicated to public health workforce development. Course lectures may be followed by reflections, resource materials, faculty-led Internet discussions, quizzes, and other exercises.

Training is available year-round. State health department workers may participate by contacting their workforce development coordinator.
