Health Department issues public notice on sewage spill

The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed that sewage from the City of Uniontown sewage system has been and is overflowing to Cottonwood Creek. Cottonwood Creek flows into Prairie Creek and from there, on to the Black Warrior River above Demopolis.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has issued an administrative order to the City of Uniontown as a result of a sewage overflow occurring from the city’s spray irrigation field into nearby Freetown Creek. Freetown Creek flows into Chilatchee Creek and continues on to flow to the Alabama River near Alberta, AL.

ADPH denies application for license of new operator for Birmingham abortion/reproductive health facility

The Alabama Department of Public Health has denied an application for license submitted by Ochata Management, L.L.C., of Birmingham to operate an abortion or reproductive center.

Ryals Honored for Work for Health

The Pueblo City-County Health Department on Monday named its first Public Health Champion, honoring Dr. Jarvis Ryals for his service to the department and public safety campaigns. The retired neurologist received the award as part of the department’s Public Health Week activities. Dr. Christine Nevin-Woods, executive director of the department, said the award would be given annually.

“This award is presented to Dr. Ryals for his many contributions in support of public health over the past 30 years,” Nevin-Woods said.

Action taken against license of New Woman All Women Health Care

Professional staff of the Bureau of Health Provider Standards, Alabama Department of Public Health, have performed a comprehensive investigation of New Woman All Women Health Care in Birmingham in response to a complaint received in January 2012.

No hepatitis A outbreak in Tuscaloosa County

As of March 29, 2012, only one case of hepatitis A has been identified in Tuscaloosa County in a single food handler. According to Dr. Donald Williamson, State Health Officer, “At this time, no additional cases have been identified. I want to thank the owner and managers of the McDonald’s at 2000 McFarland Blvd. for sending the food handler home as soon as they knew he was sick."

Hepatitis A Virus was possibly transmitted at McDonald’s in Northport

Researchers seek survey participants for oil spill health study

Make the next generation tobacco free; an alarming number of Alabama high school students smoke cigarettes

More than $1 million is spent each hour to market tobacco products in this country--and 99 percent of all new smokers are youth and young adults who are enticed by this marketing. In Alabama, surveys indicate that an estimated 18.6 percent of high school students smoke and 10,000 Alabama youth under 18 become new daily smokers each year.

Alabama’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program documents high use of prescription painkillers, as drug overdose deaths are an urgent concern
