Alumnus of the Year Award

The Alumnus of the Year award recognizes a graduate who has made significant contributions to the field of public health through demonstrated commitment and exemplary leadership. Nominations should include a letter explaining why the alumnus is deserving of this award and a resume or CV if possible. Additional letters of support are welcome. Self-nominations are not accepted. A committee comprised of alumni and faculty review the applications and select a recipient. The award is given at the School’s convocation ceremony each May.

Distinguished Alumnus Award

The Distinguished Alumnus award recognizes a graduate of five years or greater who has promoted its mission of promoting health and preventing disease. The recipient of this award will be an alumnus who would serve as a source of inspiration to students, alumni, and other public health professionals and who would be a source of pride for the School of Public Health and UAB.  There is not a call for nominations for this award. Rather, nominees will be identified throughout the year based on recommendations of the director of alumni relations, faculty, friends or alumni of the School. This honor is bestowed by the Dean and is not necessarily awarded each year.

Alumni Award for Scientific Excellence

The Alumnus Award for Scientific Excellence is awarded to the graduate who pursues a research career and whose work reflects the very best of what the School offers to its students. Nominations for the award should include a curriculum vitae and a detailed discussion of the accomplishments that merit this recognition. Copies or reprints of articles that illustrate the investigator’s significant contributions should be provided. It is suggested that evidence of national recognition for the nominee’s accomplishments also be provided. A selection committee comprised of three noted public health investigators drawn from outside the UAB School of Public Health will review submissions.  This award will not necessarily be awarded each year.
