For Outstanding Achievement By A Woman In The Statistical Sciences
Recipient: Kathryn Roeder, Ph.D.
Dr. Kathryn Roeder, Professor in the Department of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities & Social Sciences, is the recipient of the Twelfth Annual Janet L. Norwood Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the Statistical Sciences. She will accept the award at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Roeder is Professor of Statistics at the Lane Center for Computational Biology. In her early work, she played a pivotal role developing the foundations of DNA forensic inference. Her current work focuses on statistical genomics, and the genetic basis of complex disease with an emphasis on autism. Roeder received her BS in Wildlife Resources from University of Idaho and her Ph.D. in Statistics from Pennsylvania State University. Immediately securing an Assistant Professorship at Yale University, her career path then took her to Carnegie Mellon University in 1994. Dr. Roeder is an elected Member of the International Statistical Institute (’95), a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (’97), and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (’97). The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) has twice honored her with the Presidents’ Award (’97) & the Snedecor Award (’97). A snapshot of activities over her career include board positions with the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, advisor to both the FBI & NRC/NAS on DNA forensics and numerous editorial positions in prominent journals.
