Deep South Center for OH&S Welcomes New Faculty Member
Karen Heaton, PhD, recently joined the faculty of the School of Nursing as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. Dr. Heaton comes to UAB from the University of Kentucky College of Nursing where her research focused on the effect of sleep on health and injury risk in long-haul truck drivers. While attending the University of Kentucky, Dr. Heaton received a Ruth Kirschenstein Pre-doctoral fellowship-National Research Service Award for her dissertation study, Feedback actigraphy and sleep in long-haul truck drivers.
Dr. Heaton is a family nurse practitioner with many years of clinical practice experience in the emergency department setting. She will be working with Dr. Kathleen Brown in the Community Health, Outcomes, and Systems Department at the School of Nursing.

Dr. Kathleen Brown, Professor and Chair of Community Health, Outcomes and Systems in the School of Nursing at UAB, was recognized for her dedication to the field of occupational health and safety at the 21st Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference. Dr. Brown was nominated by current and former students with letters that expounded on her contributions to the promotion of the field through her service, research and her teaching.
Her research in health promotion and injury prevention has received national recognition through the years; she has served and continues to serve on national committees as an evaluator. Her teaching skills have won the hearts of many graduate students and Kathleen received the UAB President’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004.
On letter, written by UAB SON alumnus, Florence Dyer stated, “…I appreciate her capacity to remain elegant under pressure and to steadfastly challenge her advisees to set high goals and strive daily to achieve them.” Doctoral candidate, Christie Shelton, wrote, :Dr. Brown has been instrumental in influencing research in the occupational health arena. No other candidate is more worthy of such an honor than Dr. Kathleen Brown.” Another doctoral candidate, Mantana Damrongsak wrote, “Her service and scholarly activities clearly inspire me and provide an excellent role model for me.”

Our Center Director, R. Kent Oestenstad will present at the International Society for Respiratory Protection Biennial Meeting in Dublin, Ireland. Dr. O.’s research paper is Exhalation Valve Leakage Measured by a Negative Pressure Fit Test Method and its Effect on the Measurement of Human Subjects Fit Factors. Congrats to Dr. O. and his advisee, Stephanie Lynch.
