Advancements in Exposure Assessment –

Improving Data Interpretation and Professional Judgment
Using Bayesian Decision Analysis

Thursday, February 11, 2010 Vulcan Materials – Liberty Park Birmingham, AL
8 AM – 4 PM Co-Sponsored by Vulcan Materials and 3M

COURSE OVERVIEW - The Bayesian statistical framework offers exciting opportunities for improving the accuracy, efficiency, and transparency of our exposure judgments. Bayesian techniques can be used to formally combine our professional judgment regarding a particular exposure and its uncertainty along with the statistical analysis of current exposure data. The language and framework of the approach holds promise for expressing the output of exposure assessments in a manner that is much more easily understood and communicated than the output from more traditional statistical analysis. Best of all, the Bayesian decision analysis approach formalizes traditional exposure assessment processes already used by industrial hygienists today. This course will provide an overview of the Bayesian framework for decision analysis and explore, through discussion and workshops, opportunities for its application in industrial hygiene data interpretation and exposure risk assessment.

FACULTY - Perry Logan, CIH Perry is currently manager for 3M Corporate Industrial Hygiene. He has made numerous technical presentations on comprehensive exposure assessment, use of mathematical exposure models, surface and air sampling system technologies, and FTIR methods for industrial hygiene. He is a current instructor for “Bayesian Statistics for IH” and “Exposure Assessment Strategies and Statistics” and a past instructor for several other professional development courses (PDCs) related to gas / vapor detection and professional judgment decision making. Perry was the 2006 Kusnetz Award recipient, the past Chair of AIHA’s Exposure Assessment Strategies Committee (2008), and AIHA’s Gas and Vapor Detection Systems Committee (2002). Perry has a BS in Chemical Engineering, MS in Industrial Hygiene and is currently pursuing his PhD in Environmental Health at the University of Minnesota.
