“The strength of the Industrial Hygiene (IH) program was its synergy with the other departments in the School of Public Health, in particular the Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Health Behavior Departments. This collaboration was encouraged by the IH faculty members, and was grounded in the curriculum, and it provided me with an opportunity to examine complementary work in other disciplines to comprehensively address public health. These interdisciplinary partnerships at UAB provided me with a larger perspective of public health and its ability to improve safety and health in the workplace and community”.
Mark A. Mikatavage, Dr.P.H, CIH, 2009
“I was in the workforce for several years before I went back to school to pursue my master’s degree. When I met with the faculty in the Industrial Hygiene program I knew it was the way to go. The faculty not only imparted extensive knowledge in the classroom but also invaluable experience in the way of internships, manufacturing site tours, and interaction with other safety professionals. The doctors, nurses, and engineers that I went through the program with provided insight into their professions and experiences. These are the same people on a daily basis in my career”.
Keith Boling, CSP, 2009
“I truly appreciate how UAB’s Industrial Hygiene program has prepared me for this extremely challenging career path. In addition, it has provided a strong network of peers that I am proud to work with. As you know, IH requires an individual to work independently, communicate effectively, and have a working knowledge of a variety of scientific disciplines. The knowledge gained from UAB’s program has well prepared me to work with a variety of health, safety and environmental professionals. In addition, it has enabled me to obtain my CIH and CSP professional certifications, which further supports the credibility and effectiveness of the overall program”.
Brian S. Muller, MSPH, CIH, CSP, CHMM, 2009
“As a corporate Environmental and Safety Manager, I have the responsibility for developing systems within our company that protect a 12,000 employee workforce from health/safety hazards and protecting the physical assets of a $3.5 billion company that includes 100 manufacturing plants located in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South America. My decision to attend UAB’s graduate program in Industrial Hygiene has blessed me both professionally and personally. The classroom instruction and internship that I received while attending UAB gave me a solid foundation to be the profession that I am today. I love the challenges of my job and working with people everyday to ensure they have a safe and healthy environment to work in. Given these tough economics times that we live in today, I feel very fortunate to have UAB’s Industrial Hygiene program on my resume as it has offered me great job security and has allowed me to be a great provider to my family. Words cannot express how thankful I am to have a UAB MPH in industrial hygiene and the career opportunities it has provided to me”.
David Walraven, MPH, CIH, 2009
“I started with Nissan almost seven years ago when the plant was still under construction. I am currently the most tenured member of the Safety Department and have achieved both the CIH and CSP designation. Working for an international company affords me the opportunity to effect change in the safety culture here in America and abroad in our various facilities around the globe”.
Shawn Price, MSPH, CIH, CSP, 2009
