Popcorn Anyone? The investigation of severe fixed obstructive lung disease in microwave popcorn production workers

Dr. Kanwal was part of the NIOSH team that investigated the occurrence of severe lung disease in microwave popcorn production workers.  At the of this session you will be able to accurately describe the nature of the illnesses in these workers and the steps that were taken to investigate the illness etiology, and you will be able to list the key medical surveillance questions physicians should ask their patients to identify and treat work-related respiratory illness and prevent additional illnesses. Dr. Rich Kanwal earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency training at UAB.  He earned his MPH degree from UAB in 2000.

After Dr. Kanwal’s presentation, we will have a panel of physicians for a question and answer session of work-related lung illnesses.  Joining Dr. Kanwal will be Dr. Veena Antony, Professor of Medicine, Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care at UAB and Timothy J. Key, MD, MPH, Occupational Health Physician, UAB Occupational Health & Safety.

As an AL Board of Nursing Approved Provider, the Deep South Center for Occupational Health & Safety awards Best Practices in Occupational Medicine 4.0 contact hours (expiration date 01/03/2015).  Participants who attend the program will earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs), the national standard of recognition for nonacademic professional education.
