COURSE OVERVIEW

Hearing loss is one of the most pervasive occupational health problems in America today. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), approximately 30 million workers are exposed on their jobs to noise levels or toxicants that are potentially hazardous to their hearing. Fortunately, noise-induced hearing loss can oftentimes be prevented with an effective hearing conservation program at the worksite.

This workshop is designed for anyone who must deal with noise exposures in the workplace -- providing solutions to noise exposures. The hands-on aspect of the workshop will provide participants an opportunity to take noise measurements and observe some pitfalls of incorrect instrument use.

Case studies will be used to evaluate noise monitoring schemes and engineering controls.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course is designed for anyone with industrial hygiene noise monitoring responsibilities.

FACULTY

Judy McBride, MSPH, CIH is the Assistant Chemical Safety Officer for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Ms. McBride is certified in the practice of industrial hygiene and has been in the safety field for over 15 years. She has performed numerous noise surveys and instructed on safety and industrial hygiene topics for several years.

Participants’ Comments
“I enjoyed the workshop as it enhanced our knowledge of how to survey noise and to analyze for the best response or resolution to your different situations. Also, you learn how to pinpoint the exact source and what to look for in solutions. First step, engineer out the issue to avoid placing employees in PPE if at all possible.” “Great demonstrations!”

PROFESSIONAL POINTS

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene has awarded this program 1.0 IH CM Points for full course participants approval #09-362. Professional points will be available for nurses.
