 NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Training Program Changes

Two important program changes to the NIOSH Spirometry Training Program (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/spirometry/training.html) will take effect January 1, 2009. First, a time limitation will be placed on the certificates awarded to students who successfully complete NIOSH-approved spirometry training. Second, NIOSH will begin reviewing and approving dedicated spirometry refresher training courses designed for technicians who have previously completed a NIOSH-approved spirometry course and are seeking recertification. For additional information contact Lu-Ann Beeckman-Wagner at lbb3@cdc.gov.

COURSE OVERVIEWThe objective of the program is to develop individuals who can perform proper spirometry technique. Learning proper spirometry technique requires observation, demonstration and hands-on practice. The basics of respiratory anatomy and physiology, lung volume determinants of respiratory flow and how the environment affects the respiratory system are covered. Participants will be taught the proper techniques for obtaining valid spirometric values as defined by NIOSH including instrumentation and the basis for spirometric measurement, mechanics of data collection, reduction in accordance with the acceptability criteria and the use of predicted values.

Recently, the Center’s Spirometry Workshop was evaluated by NIOSH in an effort to strengthen the utility and effectiveness of the NIOSH Spirometry Training Program.  We are pleased to share comments received by NIOSH on our workshop:

"The manuals you distributed to the students were excellent and provided ample information to serve as a useful reference at their workplace.  The course faculty members were knowledgeable and demonstrated the ability to provide valuable insight into the practical aspects of testing in health and diseased populations.

“Such glowing remarks and positive feedback would not have been possible without the support of our Course Directors and Practicum Instructors. I believe we offer one of the best courses available because of our faculty’s expertise and commitment,” said Elizabeth H. Maples, PhD, Deputy Director
