It's not to late to be refreshed! Based the NIOSH new guidelines implemented January 1, 2009
 
Technicians whose NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Course certificates are dated January 1, 2000, through December 31, 2005, must successfully complete a NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Refresher Course (or repeat the initial Course) by December 31, 2010, to maintain a valid NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Course certificate. COURSE OVERVIEW

The objective of the program is to develop individuals who can perform proper spirometry technique. Learning proper spirometry technique requires observation, demonstration and hands-on practice. The basics of respiratory anatomy and physiology, lung volume determinants of respiratory flow and how the environment affects the respiratory system are covered. Participants will be taught the proper techniques for obtaining valid spirometric values as defined by NIOSH including instrumentation and the basis for spirometric measurement, mechanics of data collection, reduction in accordance with the acceptability criteria and the use of predicted values.

Lisa Montiel, MAEd, RRT is Lead Practicum Instructor, is currently the Director of Cardiopulmonary Services at UAB Medical West. Ms. Montiel has a Masters of Arts Degree in Education and is involved with a number of health related professional organizations and committees. She is NIOSH approved practicum instructor and has been a Registered Respiratory Therapist since 1981.

Audiometric Testing & Hearing Conservation Refresher

COURSE OVERVIEW

The objective of this program is to teach the participant to become an active part of a Hearing conservation Program (HCP). Through lectures, workshop exercises and supervised hands-on activities, a basic understanding of a comprehensive HCP and audiometric testing is achieved. Successful completion of the course leads to certification by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC).

Georgia Holmes, AuD, CCC-A has over 30 years in the field of audiology and hearing conservation. She has directed an in-house HCP for a large utility and served on an ANSI working committee to establish criteria to judge the effectiveness of HCPs. Dr. Holmes is often listed in the top 10 CAOHC Course Directors. Georgia is Director at the Speech and Hearing Clinic, Auburn University at Montgomery. During the practicum sessions, Dr. Holmes is assisted by experienced instructors.

Participants should call the hotel directly for reservations and mention that you are attending a UAB/Deep South Center sponsored course. Industrial Hygienists: ABIH has awarded Spirometry Workshop Refresher 1.0 CM points

Nurses: As an approved provider of the AL Board of Nursing, The Deep South Center for Occupational Health & Safety (ABNP0420) has awarded: Spirometry Workshop refresher 6.5 contact hours.

Others: The CEU is a nationally recognized unit of measure for non-credit educational programs, with one CEU defined as 10 contact hours of participation. Spirometry Workshop refresher .6 ceus.

Registration is limited for each class, so early registration is recommended. Registration fees in full are required along with a registration form. Phone registrations are accepted with credit card payment only.

Registration fees must be received in advance. The registration fee, less 20%, is refundable if written notification is received 2 weeks prior to program. Please Note:

Spirometry Workshop Refreshers: Prior to enrollment in a NIOSH Approved Refresher Course, participants will have to provide a copy their NIOSH- Approved Spirometry Training Certificate. Participants with a course certificate that is dated prior to January 1, 2000 will need to complete the full course again.

Audiometric Testing Refreshers: Prior to enrollment in the refresher course, be sure to verify your eligibility with CAOHC by calling 414.276.5338. The Deep South Center for OH&S is not responsible for applicant’s fees who take this course if ineligible for recertification
