Dr. Lungu received a BS in Physics (1981) and MS in Nuclear Materials Engineering from University of Bucharest in 1983, MS in Physics (1994), and Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences (Industrial Hygiene track) from University of South Carolina in 1998. He was awarded a research fellowship from the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1991 and the Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship in 2010. Currently an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health and Mechanical Engineering (secondary) at UAB, he is the Interim Director of the NIOSH supported Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety.
Dr. Lungu's current research effort is directed towards evaluating environmental and occupational exposures to gasses and vapors, the use of innovative 3D technology for designing respirator face pieces, the use of carbon nanotubes for air sampling involving photo-thermal desorption, adsorption on activated carbon fibers, and the development of novel natural fiber-based composite adsorbent materials for respirators, air pollution control and environmental remediation.
