MPH Curriculum - Required Course Schedule

 

The MPH-EPI program is intended for persons who anticipate careers in public health practice or research. In addition, students who wish to enter doctoral-level training should consider majoring in epidemiology at the master's level. The MPH-EPI degree consists of a 43-49 credit hour minimum. The 43 credit hour minimum is designed for students with a prior doctoral degree in a biological or health-related field, or for students with substantial health-related work experience or five or more years of public health experience. The MPH-EPI 49 credit hour minimum program is designed for students without a prior doctoral degree or relevant health-related work experience. The curriculum includes the MPH Core requirement (22 hours) and additional epidemiology and biostatistics courses. 

 Graduate Certificate in Global Health Studies

Beginning in the Fall 2010 semester, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is pleased to offer an accredited graduate certificate program in Global Health Studies (GHS) through The UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health. This 15-hour certificate program will be offered to any UAB graduate student or anyone enrolled as a UAB non-degree seeking graduate student who wishes to gain knowledge and skills in the field of global health.
 

Within the UAB School of Public Health, the GHS Graduate certificate program will replace the current International Health and Global Studies concentration (IHGS) currently offered in the Departments of Epidemiology, Health Behavior, Environmental Health, and Healthcare Organization & Policy. Students will be expected to sign up for their primary degree and have the option of adding the GHS certificate by completing 15 hours of GHS coursework in addition to their degree requirements.

The MSPH in Epidemiology is an academic degree designed for students who wish to receive education and training in epidemiologic research methods. Completion of didactic course work and a thesis research project are required. Students are required to present their final thesis project presentation during the final term of enrollment or graduation term. This degree can be completed in 4-5 semesters plus the May mini-term or in 12-18 months. A total of 47 credit hours must be earned to receive the MSPH-EPI degree. A minimum of 26 core credit hours are required, and at least 9 credit hours must be research credits. Prior to, or at the time of matriculation, the student and advisor must agree on the courses the student will take to fulfill these requirements.
 
 
 
The MSPH in Pharmacoepidemiology and Comparative Effectiveness Research is an academic degree that will provide students with masters level training  in Epidemiology, with a strong emphasis on issues and methods important to the fields of Pharmacoepidemiology and Comparitive Effectiveness Research. Students will gain special training using clinical Epidemiology research methods to better understand the adverse and beneficial effects of therapeutic drugs in human populations. The MSPH-PCER degree is 43 credit hours with 26 core credit hours required, and at least 9 credit hours of research. A final thesis project is required to be presented in the last term of enrollment or graduation term. This degree can be completed in 12-18 months or in 4-5 semesters of enrollment.
 
 
This program is a post-medical degree training program, aimed primarily at fellows and faculty members interested in developing skills required for clinical research.  It is anticipated that this academic training will supplement extensive training in the content area in which the student is trained, and senior mentoring in the politics and policies of project development and management. A graduate of this program will have the academic training to develop and lead independent research programs and projects. The MSPH in Clinical and Translational Science consists of 42 semester hours. Of these, 26 core credit hours are required. The MSPH requires a research project and students must complete a minimum of 9 semester hours of masters level research. Students enrolled in this degree program generally complete the program within 12-24 months, depending on the student's UAB School of Medicine clinical and or academic schedules.

 Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology (PhD)

The PhD program emphasizes epidemiologic study design and data analysis. The program is designed to prepare exceptionally qualified individuals for a career of research and teaching. A minimum of 60 credit hours must be earned to receive the PhD in Epidemiology degree. Of this 60 credit hour minimum, 24 hours must be earned in doctoral level didactic Epidemiology courses and/or Biostatistics courses and at least 12 hours of directed research EPI 798 and 12 hours of dissertation research EPI 799 must be taken. Students must also complete at least two full semesters in candidacy (EPI 799 credits) before being allowed to graduate.
