John W. Waterbor, MD, MS, DrPH, is Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the UAB School of Public Health and a Scientist in UAB's Comprehensive Cancer Center and Injury Control Research Center. In 1988, he published his dissertation on the causes of death of major league baseball players in the New England Journal of Medicine (Waterbor, JW; Cole P; Delzell E; Andjelkovich, D: The Mortality Experience of Major League Baseball Players. NEJM 318:1278-80, 1988.)
His professional interests are cancer epidemiology and control, injury epidemiology and control, epidemiologic methods, screening for chronic diseases, racial disparities in disease rates, health effects of smokeless tobacco, and accuracy in translation of epidemiologic research results into public education literature. He is Director of UAB's Cancer Research Experiences for Students (CaRES) R25E training grant and Co-Director of UAB's Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program (CPCTP) R25T training grant, both funded by the National Cancer Institute. He is Past President (2007- 2008) of the American Association for Cancer Education and sits on the Editorial Board of the Association's Journal of Cancer Education. He has served on several external advisory committees for cancer education grants at other universities. He chairs the Surveillance Committee of the Alabama Department of Public Health's Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition and serves on the research advisory board for the Alabama Statewide Cancer Registry. Currently, he is collaborating on the proposal for a Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan for Alabama for 2011 – 2015, for submission to CDC. Dr. Waterbor works with the Mid-south Division of the American Cancer Society on community-based cancer control projects.
At UAB, he is Director of the Ph.D. Program in Epidemiology and teaches graduate-level courses in epidemiologic methods, cancer epidemiology, and injury epidemiology. He won the UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1993 and in 2005, and has been nominated numerous other times. He is Past President (2005 – 2006) of UAB’s Upsilon Chapter of the Delta Omega Public Health Honors Society. Dr. Waterbor has mentored eight doctoral students in epidemiology and has served on numerous other graduate student research committees. He also serves on many administrative committees for the department, school, and University.
