Dr. Shrestha received his MHS (Infectious disease/Genetic Epidemiology) and PhD (Genetic Epidemiology) from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and MS (Biotechnology) from Kreiger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins University. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, NCI-Frederick before joining the School of Public Health faculty in 2005. Dr. Shrestha holds an appointment in the Minority Health Research Center, Center for AIDS Research and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. He is also a faculty of Genetics and Genomic Sciences. He is an Associate Editor of American Journal of Epidemiology and serves in the editorial board of Genes and Immunity.

Research Interests

Dr. Shrestha's research interst include infectogenomics, vaccinogenomics, pharmacogenetics, and immunogenetics of outcomes and chronic diseases caused by HIV and other infections.

          Kawasaki disease - suscpetibility, IVIG treatment response, development of coronary artery disease

          Outcomes in HIV-1 patients - atherosclerosis, renal diseases, response and outcomes of HAART 

          HPV related outcomes and cancers - in men and women

          Infectious disease and co-infection outcomes -  HIV, HPV, HBV, HSV-2

 

Teaching

He is the course master for Epi 731 - Genetic Epidemiology & Epi 635 - Genetics in Public Health in SOPH (taught alternatively every other year), and GBS721 - Genetic Epidemiology in the School of Medicine. He also co-directs Basic Research in Infectious and Genetic Epidemiology (BRIDGE) program.
