Dr. Nir Menachemi is a professor in the Department of Health Care Organization and Policy, and holds appointments in the UAB Department of Health Services Administration, the UAB School of Business, and the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy. He teaches courses in strategic management and health information technology and policy. Dr. Menachemi is also the director of the department's doctoral program.
In 2011, Dr. Menachemi was awarded the UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition, he was recognized with the Graduate School Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship. Moreover, Menachemi was awarded the "Professor John D. and Starr A. Blair Award in Health Organization Management Research" presented by the faculty at Texas Tech University Rawls College of Business.
Dr. Menachemi has published 100+ peer-reviewed scientific papers-- and his work is frequently showcased by the popular press. Much of his writing has focused on health information technologies, patient safety, medical malpractice, and healthcare quality issues. He has published in such journals as Health Affairs, Health Services Research, Health Care Management Review (HCMR), Archives of Internal Medicine, the Journal of Healthcare Management, the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, and many more. He also serves on the editorial board of HCMR and is an ad hoc reviewer for JAMA, Journal of Rural Health, and the American Journal of Managed Care among others.
From 2002-2007, Dr. Menachemi was a member of the founding faculty at the College of Medicine at Florida State University (FSU). At FSU, he directed the Center on Patient Safety and was a faculty member in the department of Family Medicine and Rural Health. While in Florida, Dr. Menachemi was invited several times by the Florida legislature to testify on healthcare issues. In addition, he was appointed as Special Advisor to the Florida Governor's Health Information Infrastructure Advisory Board and served on several statewide policy committees with emphases on patient safety, or electronic medical records.
In 2002, Dr. Menachemi completed the Lister Hill Health Policy Fellowship at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In that capacity, he was involved with the Federal Patient Safety Task Force and was engaged in numerous project related to medical errors prevention. Dr. Menachemi received his undergraduate and MPH degrees from the University at Albany, State University of New York. He earned his Ph.D. in Health Services Administration with a focus in Strategic Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
