All students in the MPH degree programs are required to have mastered the Biological Basis of Public Health Competency Exam requirement by the last day to add & drop classes for the Fall Semester.  All MPH degree admits were reviewed during the admissions process to determine if they demonstrated an adequate background in the biologic sciences. Your letter of admission to the School of Public Health indicated whether or not you have met the competency requirement. If a waiver was not indicated, then you are required to take the Biological Basis exam.

Overview of Public Health Course This course is required for all M.S. (in Biostatistics), MSPH, and PhD students in Public Health programs. This is a self-paced course taken in the UAB Canvas LMS,  that will require you to watch videos, read articles, answer discussion questions, and complete quizzes. Additionally, you must attend four one-hour seminars within the School of Public Health (online students can contact Cheryl Johnson for an alternate assignment). The objective of this course is twofold: to provide professional degree students a broad overview of the core areas of public health and to facilitate students' understanding of how their specializations relate to achieving public health's goals. This course should take approximately 37 hours to complete including time spent reading, watching videos, attending seminars, completing assignments, and taking quizzes. Individual times will vary, of course.

All students enrolled in M.S. in Biostatistics, MSPH, and PhD programs are automatically placed in this UAB Canvas course. However, if you already possess an MPH, you may be waived from completing this course by contacting Dr. Donna Arnett (
