David Becker (Ph.D. and B.A., Economics, University of California, Berkeley) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Care Organization and Policy in the UAB School of Public Health. Prior to his graduate studies, David was a researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research (Stanford, CA; 1997-99) and a healthcare consultant with The Lewin Group (1996-97).
Professor Becker specializes in health, labor and regulatory economics. Much of his research deals with issues in health care policy, including studies of Medicare fraud and abuse, malpractice pressure and physician supply, and the role of financial incentives in health care quality. He is currently working on a number of health services research projects including studies of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease in the elderly and ED utilization within the Alabama Children's Health Insurance Program. Becker is also interested in the design and effectiveness of public health regulation. He has two ongoing studies which examine the economic efficency of automobile emissions and restaurant inspection programs. Finally, Professor Becker has a number of projects which address the role of non-medical factors in population health. Of particular interest is the role of social status and stress in life expectancy.
He has published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Health Economics, The Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, Health Services Research, Expert Reviews in Outcomes Research and Pharmacoeconomics, Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, Clinical Pediatrics, Archives of Internal Medicine and Health Services and Outcomes Research Methodology.
