Dr. Michael Kogan holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Yale University, an MA in Health Policy from Tufts University, and a BA Psychology from the University of Rhode Island. He is currently the Director, Office of Data and information Management for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. In this position he is responsible for directing activities of the office with an emphasis on 1) maternal and child health research; 2) building the data capacity of federal, state and local areas in maternal and child health; and 3) building the maternal and child health epidemiology capacity in the United States.

  • From 1988-1999 he was a Senior Epidemiologist at the National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control where he · Directed overall NCHS activities for The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study -- Birth Cohort: A national study examining child health and development
  • Directed overall activities for the Childhood Immunization Birth Certificate Followback Survey: A study to assess immunization levels among preschool age children.
  • Directed overall activities related to the 1991 Longitudinal Followup to the 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey: A U.S. national study of child health.
  • Coordinated development of study instruments for the 1991 Longitudinal Followup (LF) for respondents, hospitals, and pediatric care providers.
  • Coordinated data collection activities for the LF pretest and main survey.
  • Raised $4 million from other federal agencies to support the 1991 Longitudinal Followup.
  • Managed financial activities for the 1991 survey.
  • Assisted in coordinating sample selection, data quality control for the 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey.
  • Coordinating long-range planning for the next National Maternal and Infant Health Survey.
  • Developed a book chapter with the U.S. Surgeon General's office on Health of Minority Women and Children.
  • Served as acting branch chief during absences of branch chief.
  • As Epidemiologist for the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health from 1985 to 1988 he
  • Designed and developed Massachusetts Perinatal Information Packet.
  • Analyzed Massachusetts Prenatal Care Survey.
  • Designed and conducted 1-year and 5-year analyses of the Massachusetts Maternal and Infant Care Programs.
  • Produced needs assessment scale for allocation of maternal and child health funds.
  • Evaluated effectiveness of Healthy Start prenatal care reimbursement program.
  • Wrote sections of grants that brought $1.8 million to the Dept.
  • Designed and analyzed mortality study of Vietnam veterans in Massachusetts.
  • Supervised data retrieval and verification process for veteran's study.
  • Authored report The Case for Health Promotion: Health Status Indicators and Economic Factors.

Dr. Kogan has also served as a Research Associate for Boston University, as a Field Research Specialist for Abt Associates of Cambridge, MA and as a Research Associate at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. His international health experience includes serving as a Public Health Curriculum Trainer for Boston University, US AID in Bogota, Colombia where he conducted a course on competency-based public health project design methods.

Dr. Kogan has published numerous articles and served on many professional committees related to maternal and child health.
