Application
Information
To Qualify for Research Training Opportunities, you must be:
- A US citizen or permanent
resident
- African
American, Hispanic American, Native American, Pacific Islander,
or someone interested in conducting research on health problems
that disproportionately affect underserved groups
- An
undergraduate, graduate (master's or doctoral) or health
professions students at an accredited US college or university
- Interested
in pursuing a research career in a biomedical discipline,
academic medicine, or public health
- Able
to provide academic transcripts and two letters of reference
- Fair
level of proficiency in Spanish (if interested in the Peru
or Guatemala training sites).
- Able
to spend 12 weeks overseas (usually mid-Maythrough August).
Instructions For Completing Application:
- Fill out the application
for admission form providing complete and accurate information.
Be sure to sign the certification statement at the bottom
of the third page of the form.
- Attach
original transcripts from every college and/or university
you have ever attended (whether or not a degree was awarded).
The transcripts you attach should come from the same institutions
listed under section VI of the Application Form. Your institution
may require that the transcript be sent directly to us;
if so, have it sent to the attention of the UAB MHIRT Director,
Dr. Pauline Jolly, at the address above.
- Obtain
letters of reference from two persons (one of whom should
be a professor) who can judge your qualifications and characteristics
for overseas research and training. The letter should contain
as much of the following information as possible:
- How
long has the person known you, and in what capacity.
- Comments
on: mastery of your chosen course of study; motivation
and initiative; communication skills; intellectual capacity;
and work habits.
- Comments
on your ability to interact effectively with others,
particularly in cross-cultural settings. If desired,
letters may be sent directly to the UAB MHIRT Program
Director.
- Each
applicant to the MHIRT program is required to submit a statement
of interest. Please relate your interest in public health/biomedical
research to your formal education, past and current employment,
research interests and career aspirations. Your statement
should be as specific as possible, but it must be no longer
than two single-side pages (single-spaced).
- Completed
application materials should be mailed together if possible.
Remove the application instructions before sending. Please
check the list below to ensure that you have included all
of the required documents. Arrange the documents in the
order listed:
- Completed
and signed application form
- Statement
of Interest
- Two
letters of reference
- Transcripts
from all colleges and/or universities attended
- The
application may be photocopied for use by others.
- Make
a photocopy of your completed application (for your
records) before mailing
- A
brief two-page resume
