(DVM/MPH) Coordinated Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Auburn) / Master of Public Health Program 2016-17

Catalog 2016-2017

Program Description

The DVM/MPH coordinated dual degree program is offered through the Office of Research and Graduate Studies at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine (AUCVM) and the UAB School of Public Health (SOPH). Students may focus their MPH in any one of four areas, including: (1) Environmental Health Science, (2) Epidemiology, (3) Health Behavior, (4) Health Care Organization and Policy, or a combination (general MPH). MPH focus courses may be customized to the experience and needs of the student.

Through its DVM degree, the AUCVM prepares individuals for careers of excellence in veterinary medicine, including private and public practice, industrial medicine, academics, and research. Through its MPH program, the SOPH prepares students for careers to improve the health and well being of individuals, families, communities and populations, locally and globally. These complementary coordinated degree programs provide students with a fuller and richer perspective of and appreciation for community and global health recognizing the intersection of human health, animal health and the environment. Addition of an MPH degree to the DVM broadens career opportunities, providing a foundation for positions in research, government, and international health as well as private industry.

Program Requirements

Students must complete the MPH Core plus 10 credit hours of MPH focus courses for a total of 30 credit hours in addition to the required DVM curriculum requirements. Twelve credit hours from the DVM curriculum are credited toward the MPH degree for a total of 42 MPH credit hours. Students may complete the MPH degree program totally online, in class, or through a mix of online and in class experiences. Out-of state online students pay the same tuition rate as Alabama residents.

Program Admission Process

Students entering the DVM program with a Bachelor Degree may enroll in the MPH program and begin courses during the summer term before they matriculate into the DVM.

Students who enter the DVM program without a Bachelor degree, but will be awarded a BS/BA at end of their first year may still begin a MPH degree. Since UAB typically requires a Bachelor degree to take graduate-level course, these students may apply to UAB as a “transient” (visiting student) in order to begin work on a MPH degree in the summer before they matriculate into the DVM. Transient students are designated as non-degree and there is no limit on the number of courses/hours for which they may register. After these students are awarded a BS/BA they may finish taking the required MPH courses or if they are not awarded a BS/BA degree may begin to complete their MPH degree in their last semester before being awarded the DVM.

Those students entering without a BS degree and the DVM degree becomes their first degree may apply during their final semester of the DVM program and then could start the MPH program either in the summer or fall following graduation with the DVM and would be allowed to count the 12 shared hours.

Students are admitted separately to the MPH and DVM programs. Upon acceptance to the AUCVM DVM program, students will be accepted automatically to the UAB MPH degree program.
