(MSW/MPH) Coordinated Master of Social Work / Master of Public Health in Maternal & Child Health Policy & Leadership 2016-17

Catalog 2016-2017

Coordinated Master of Social Work (University of Alabama)/Master of Public Health (MSW/MPH) Program

Program Description

This coordinated degree program is offered through the University of Alabama School of Social Work (UA) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health.  Students may focus their MPH in any one of five areas: (1) Environmental Health Science, (2) Epidemiology, (3) Health Behavior, (4) Health Care Organization and Policy or a combination (general MPH).  The Health Care Organization and Policy option typically focuses on Maternal and Child Health (MCH).  MPH focus courses may be customized to the experience and needs of the student.

The University of Alabama School of Social Work seeks to solve bio-psychosocial problems, improve individual and social conditions, and promote justice and human dignity. The UA Master of Social Work degree addresses the critical shortage of and pressing need for professionally trained social workers. The MPH degree prepares students for careers to improve the health and well being of individuals, families, communities and populations, locally and globally. The MSW/MPH coordinated degree program broadens students’ perspective concerning local and global population health and issues related to poverty and rural and intercity settings as well as the importance of access to care and prevention.

The addition of an MPH degree to the MSW also expands career opportunities providing a foundation for careers in a variety of social work and/or public health settings related to policy and program development; organization of community services; program administration, planning and evaluation; research and teaching.

Program Requirements

Students must complete the MPH Core plus 12 credit hours of MPH focus courses for a total of 30 credit hours in addition to the required MSW curriculum requirements.  Twelve credit hours from the MSW curriculum are credited toward the MPH degree for a total of 42 MPH credit hours.  Students may complete the MSW/MPH degree program totally online, in class, or through a mix of online and in class experiences.  Out-of state students pay the same tuition rate as Alabama residents for online MPH courses.
