EPI Seminar Series: Russell Griffin, PhD

Dr. Griffin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, having joined the faculty January of 2012. He has been a part of the UAB family since 2000, when he began his undergraduate studies in Biology, additionally receiving his M.P.H. and Ph.D. degrees in epidemiology from UAB. His main expertise is in trauma and acute care surgery, where he has published numerous papers related to trauma care as well as motor vehicle- and consumer product-related injury. More recently in the field of injury epidemiology, his efforts have been focused on using big data to direct efforts to improve clinical care of trauma and burn patients. Outside of his work in injury epidemiology, he has worked with many researchers across campus with focuses on:

  • Serving as the epidemiologist for the Pediatric and Infant Center for Acute Nephrology (PICAN) center out of Children's of Alabama where he helps to direct research on biomarkers of acute kidney injury among neonates
  • Working with nephrologists at UAB Hospital to examine the utility of the use of home dialysis in rural settings
  • Working with the Office of Quality and Patient Safety at UAB Hospital to help design methods to surveil the patient population for reportable outcomes and improve quality of inpatient care
