Jeff deGraffenried Jr., with more than 180 other Graduate Students, recently participated in the 2008 UAB Graduate Research Days competition sponsored the Graduate School. Jeff was awarded 2nd place in the Social and Behavioral Health Session for his research on “Land Cover Change and Soil Organic Matter Dynamics in the Humid Tropical Highlands of Western Kenya: An Assessment Using Remote Sensing and Soil Carbon -13 Abundance.”

Jeff is a 3rd year doctoral student in the department of Environmental Health Sciences. His research was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Parcak, the Director of the Laboratory for Global Health Observation. Dr. Edward Postlethwait is the Chair of his graduate committee.
