Biological Basis of Public Health
2016 -2017 Academic Year
All students in the MPH degree programs are required to have mastered the Biological Basis of Public Health Competency Exam requirement by the last day of the semester in which they begin their program.
Newly admitted MPH students are reviewed upon admission and will be notified in their official admissions letter if they are required to take the exam. There are several ways in which this requirement can be met:
A previously earned Medical, Dental, Nursing or Dietetics degree (registered or registration eligible dieticians only).
Extensive and substantial education (earning grades of "B" or better in biological/biomedical courses).
Take the Biological Basis of Public Health Exam, earning a grade of 70 or better.
Biological Basis of Public Health Competency Exam
All MPH degree admits were reviewed during the admissions process to determine if they demonstrated an adequate background in the biologic sciences. Your letter of admission to the School of Public Health indicated whether or not you have met the competency requirement. If a waiver was not indicated, then you are required to take the Biological Basis exam. All students required to take the exam will have access to a booklet titled, “The Biological Basis of Life. A Short Course for Science-Challenged Entering Masters Students.” Each chapter of the booklet is followed by questions and answers that will be randomly selected to be placed on the exam. All exam questions are contained in the booklet.
To access the booklet, you must log into UAB Canvas LMS.
Please log in to Canvas by going to uab.instructure.com
, and logging in with your UAB BlazerID
