Master of Science in Public Health (in Epidemiology)

The MSPH program in epidemiology is an academic research degree designed for students who wish to receive education and training in epidemiologic research methods.  Completion of didactic course work and a research project are required.  This degree can be completed in 3 semesters, or possibly in 2 semesters plus a mini-term and a summer session (i.e., in one full academic year).

Admission: This program is primarily designed for persons who hold the MD, DDS, DVM, OD or PhD degree in biological science and who wish to acquire training in epidemiologic research for application within their discipline.  However, others who desire intensive training in epidemiology and biostatistics, as compared to the broader master's level training available in the MPH program, will also be considered for admission.

Curriculum:  A total of 48 credit hours must be earned to receive the MSPH degree.

** School of Public Health courses or courses from other schools (e.g., Pathology, Nutrition Sciences)  Graduate courses with the prefix GRD are no longer acceptable for credit.  Students are encouraged to take advantage of these courses as they are helpful in understanding scientific ethics, and research and writing preparation.

Advisor, Project and Committee: The student should identify a research advisor and research project within the first semester of enrollment.  This project may be originated by the student or by the advisor.  Before undertaking the research, the student must form a research committee of at least three members.  The primary advisor and another faculty member from the department will be the first two members.  The third member may be any member of UAB's academic community who has agree to advise and help mentor the student.  Additional members having special expertise may serve at the student's and advisor's discretion. When the committee members have been decided upon, the Master's Project Committee Form should be completed and forwarded to the Office of Student and Academic Services for processing.

Research Proposal and Presentation: The student must submit a short (approximately five pages) proposal on the background, objectives, and methodology of the proposed research to his or her committee.  By the end of the first semester, the student must make a brief (approximately 20 minutes) oral presentation of the proposal to the committee, which must grant its approval before the research goes forward.

Graduation Requirements: After the research project has been completed, the student must do two things in order to earn the MSPH degree:

1) Make a formal presentation of his or her research findings to the committee (with at least two members present).  All Department faculty members and students will be invited to attend.  There is no formal oral examination, but those in attendance are free to engage the student in a question-and-answer session following the presentation.

2) Submit to the advisor an advanced, or final draft of a publishable scientific manuscript for which the student is to be first or second author; or a scientific or technical report (as for industry) of high quality, for which the student deserves substantial credit.

The MSPH degree can be awarded only when both of these requirements have been fulfilled
