IS THIS COURSE FOR YOU?

"I enrolled in this course because I was interested in infectious disease surveillance, field work, and international health.  So far, this has been my favorite course and also the one I learned the most from... I am now familiar with how field studies are conducted. These skills could not have been learned solely in a classroom setting." -Amy Schuh, UAB

Global health, environmental health, epidemiology, maternal and child health, health behavior, and environmental health students will find the field studies in Jamaica highly complementary to the in-class experiences of their public health studies. Each of the three subgroups--water and sanitation, vector control and surveillance, and community based HIV prevention-- are strongly focused on public health and prevention.

Medical and nursing students interested in global health can acquire valuable experience to assist in their career decisions. A number of the experiences are both surveillance and clinically oriented, particularly in the HIV/STD subgroup.

Jamaican students who have completed their MPH studies join the students taking the UAB or San Diego State courses in all class activities, including lectures, field studies, and group projects. Their participation is key since they bring valuable experience to the study of Jamaican public health issues.

We welcome diversity. Past students hail from more than 18 states in the U.S. and 14 different countries worldwide.
