FIRST ANNUAL SHORT COURSE ON STATISTICAL GENETICS FOR OBESITY & NUTRITION RESEARCHERS

Held On: May 15 - 16, 2001

Location: UAB Continuing Education Center, 1919 Univ Blvd, Room 312

Registration Fee: $100

Intended Audience:

The intended audience are those investigators actively working or about to begin work on the genetics of obesity. Although non-human studies may be discussed, the overwhelming emphasis is on human genetics. Participants are not expected to have extensive training in either statistics or genetics, but are expected to have at least some basic familiarity with genetic and statistical terms. The course is offered on an annual basis in an alternating fashion. One year it is a 4-day course targeted somewhat more at applied data analysts and statisticians and includes much hands-on computer work. On alternating years, it is a 2-day more concept-oriented course targeted more at applied obesity investigators who wish to learn enough about the issues to work effectively in collaboration with their statisticians and data analysts. The May 2001 course is the more concept-oriented course.

Topics to be Addressed:

  • Review of concepts and terms in statistics
  • Review of concepts & terms in genetics
  • Overview of allele sharing linkage methods
  • Tests of association in the presence of linkage (TDT; Genomic Control; etc)
  • Software Options
  • Composite Tests
  • Admixture Methods
  • Modeling Multi-locus Effects
  • Multivariate Linkage Methods
  • Meta-analysis Methods
  • Fine Mapping: Prioritization, Strategies, Techniques, and Cautions
