Thomas Birkner received a Diploma in Social Sciences from the University of Goettingen, Germany and completed the Mathematics bachelor course sequence at the University of South Alabama before entering the Master’s program in Mathematics. While there, Thomas discovered that his interest was sparked primarily by his courses in statistics. In 2007 he entered the Ph.D. program in Biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In his dissertation he developed novel approaches for estimating prevalence based on pooled data under the mentorship of Inmaculada Aban and Charles Katholi. He graduated in August 2011 and is currently working as Postdoctoral Fellow. His research areas include group testing/pool screening and the conduct and design of clinical trials.
