Issa earned his PhD in Integrative Biology and Phytogenetic Resources in 2002 at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Agronomie (ENSA) of Montpellier, France. As a PhD student, he analyzed the inheritance of self-compatibility and identified sterility QTLs in Coffea canephora x C. heterocalyx interspecific hybrids.

Issa then joined the Division of Animal and Veterinary Sciences of West Virginia University to complete as a postdoctoral training in the National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture (NCCWA/ARS/USDA). He worked on the development of new microsatellite markers for mapping and the molecular characterization of genes impacting rainbow trout aquaculture commercial traits.

Issa’s research interests range across the fields of molecular and statistical genetics, association studies and gene expression network.
