Mai received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Khartoum in Zoology and Environmental Studies respectively. She worked as a lecturer in the Department Zoology at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. She received her second M.Sc. from the A&T State University, Greensboro, NC in Soil and Plant Science, where she was a lecturer for two years. Recently, she received her Ph.D in Environmental Sciences at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, AR.

She joined the Statistical Genetics Section at the Department of Biostatistics, University of Alabama at Birmingham in summer 2006. Mai is currently working under the supervision of Dr. David Allison in obesity as related to mortality rates and obesity clinical trials.
