Tesfaye Baye Mersha, received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in the area of plant sciences at Alemaya University (AU). He worked as a lecturer in genetics in the Department of Plant Sciences at AU. He earned his Ph.D. in plant genetics and breeding at the University of Goettingen. His dissertation on Vernonia galamensis concentrates on the genetics, molecular diversity, breeding, analytical methods development, multivariate and chemometric techniques of plant and NIR data analyses. In February 2004, he joined Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Program at University of Florida as a research associate.

He joined the Statistical Genetics Section of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in August 2005. He is currently applying his genetics background into the application of advanced statistical methodologies in biological discoveries as applied to disease gene localization. Tesfaye is focusing on admixture and association mapping, approaches to ancestry inference, population genetic structure, data mining and functional annotations.
