Daniel received his B.S. from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Maryland, College Park in 1995, with an interest in pathogenic microbiology. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington in 2003. Under the supervision of Dr. James Mullins, Daniel studied the population genetics of HIV-1, with focuses on recombination and metapopulation dynamics. Also at the University of Washington, he studied HIV-1 mutation and migration rates under the supervision of Dr. John Mittler.

He joined the Department of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005. Under the supervision of Drs. David Allison and Nengjun Yi in the Section on Statistical Genetics in the Department of Biostatistics, Daniel is focusing on Bayesian MCMC methods as applied to QTL mapping for obesity.
