Hairong Wei received his M.S. Degree in Computer Science from University of Chicago in 2003 and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2001. His Ph.D. research, under the supervision of Dr. Henrik Albert, was to isolate and characterize promoters and genome elements that can be used to drive foreign genes in agriculturally important monocot species. His strong efforts in his Ph.D. research resulted in two nuclear matrix attachments regions and two very useful gene promoters, to which three U.S. patents have been officially issued. Before he joined the Section on Statistical Genetics, Department of Biostatistics at University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2004, he was a researcher in Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, University of Chicago, and University of Minnesota respectively doing research in gene silencing, mouse NK cell biology and gene network inference. He joined in the Section on Statistical Genetics, Department of Biostatistics UAB with a purpose of expanding his knowledge in statistics. The focus of his research at UAB is primarily on microarray analysis using machine learning approaches.
