Mary received her Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the spring of 2006. Her graduate work examined the co-occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome and major depressive disorder in twins, aiming to determine if there is justification for future genetic studies of these two common co-occurring disorders. Additionally while at UNC, she has collaborated on genetic association projects with Kari North, Ph.D., using the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) study to examine cholesterol outcomes.

Mary joined the Section on Statistical Genetics of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a postdoctoral fellow in the fall of 2006. She is interested in learning the methods employed in genetic analyses, applying these methods appropriately in epidemiological studies, and expanding methodologic research in current topic areas such as how to work with missing genetic data and issues related to multiple testing. As part of her post-doctoral fellowship she will actively collaborate on applied projects in cardiovascular genetic epidemiology and pharmacogenetics with Dr. Donna Arnett, Professor and Chair of the Epidemiology Department.
