Welcome Students: Ignite Your Blazer Flame

The University of Alabama at Birmingham will welcome its incoming students with two weeks of cookouts, expos, movie-screenings, service projects, concerts and more. Themed “Ignite Your Inner Blazer Flame: UAB Welcome Fall 2011,” the celebration will kick off Saturday, Aug. 13  with Move-in Day Break and free refreshments for students moving on campus from 8 a.m. to noon, and end on Thursday, Sept. 1, with the UAB Office of Student Life Open House in the Hill University Center, 1400 University Blvd. There will be free food and T-shirt giveaways from 2 to 4 p.m. that day.

Prestigious Appointment For Health Behavior Chair

Dr. TuckerJalie A. Tucker, Ph.D., M.P.H., Professor and Chair, Department of Health Behavior, School of Public Health, has been elected to the American Psychological Association (APA) Board of Scientific Affairs (BSA) for a 3 year term (2011-2013). Dr. Tucker serves as the BSA member for health psychology/public health.

W. NortonWynne E. Norton, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Behavior, has received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in collaboration with researchers from Kaiser Permanente, Colorado (PI: James W. Dearing, PhD).

Two Newly Developed HB Courses for Fall Semester 2011

The Department of Health Behavior has two newly developed courses for Fall semester 2011. Dori Pekmezi, PhD, Assistant Professor, will teach a Physical Activity and Health Seminar and Terri Lewis, PhD, Assistant Professor, will teach Family Violence & Child Victimization. Both courses are expected to attract a broad audience within and outside the SOPH.

The Association of Schools of Public Health Survey

The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and an advisory group from schools of public health are developing a web-based tool to help current and prospective students see the diverse world of public health careers open to graduates of CEPH-accredited schools of public health. This application will allow individuals to search an interactive database of public health positions through using a number of search criteria.
