NPHW is an annual event that mobilizes public health professionals, the media, policy makers, and the general public to take action to improve the nation’s health. The UAB School of Public Health seeks to engage public health professionals as partners and provide resources for them to spread the word regarding NPHW’s message to the general public, media and policy makers.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Donna Arnett, President of the American Heart Association

 Dr. Donna Arnett

 Donna Arnett, Ph.D., MSPH, professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology in the UAB School of Public Health, is the first epidemiologist to lead the American Heart Association, and the second Ph.D. in that position.

“Since joining the School of Public Health as chair of the Department of Epidemiology, Donna Arnett has rapidly emerged as an energetic, visionary and highly intuitive leader, leading the Department to national prominence,” says Max Michael, M.D., Dean of the UAB School of Public Health. “As President of the AHA, she will assure that the heart health needs of everyone are embraced with wisdom and compassion.”

Guest Speaker is Dr. Hogan, former NY State Commissioner of Mental Health

The Schools of Public Health and Nursing are proud to welcome Michael Hogan, Ph.D to the 2013 National Public Health Kickoff Lunch Seminar. Dr. Hogan is the former NY State Commissioner of Mental Health. He was confirmed in March 2007 as Commissioner of Mental Health in New York, and reappointed in January 2011. The NYS Office of Mental Health operates 25 accredited psychiatric hospitals, and oversees New York’s $5 billion public mental health system that serves over 650,000 individuals annually. From 1991-2007 Dr. Hogan served as Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Mental Health from 1987-1991. He chaired the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health from 2002-2003, and was appointed as the first behavioral health representative on the board of The Joint Commission in 2007. He served on NIMH’s National Advisory Mental Health Council from 1994-1998, as President of the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMPD) from 2003-2005, and as Board President of NASMHPD’s Research Institute from 1989-2000. He has received leadership awards from the National Governor’s Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Campaign for Mental Health Reform, the American College of Mental Health Administration and the American Psychiatric Association. He is a graduate of Cornell University, earned a MS degree from the State University College in Brockport NY, and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University.

Dr. Mark Wilson, Health Officer for Jefferson County, Alabama and CEO of the Jefferson County Department of Health, will be starting off the week with a presentation entitled “Deadly Deception, a Jar of Mercury, and a Dead Bat.” Dr. Wilson has had an extensive career including time as a physician and Chief of Staff at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, a clinical teacher for UAB Medicine, and a member of both the Jefferson County Medical Society Board and the Jefferson County Board of Health.
