2010 Alumna of the Year - Beth Johns, MPH

Ms. Johns has over 25 years experience in a variety of health care settings and non profit organizations. She is currently Assistant Vice President of Early Childhood Initiatives at United Way of Central Alabama’s Success By 6. She received her master’s degree in public health from the UAB School of Public Health in 2003 in Maternal and Child Health through the Maternal and Child Health Training Grant. In 2010, Ms. Johns was named UAB School of Public Health Alumnus of the Year. She is active in many community organizations addressing health and educational disparities. She is currently licensed in Alabama to practice occupational therapy. Ms. Johns is a Robert Wood Johnson Ladder to Leadership Community Health Alumni where her fellowship focused on the improvement of health for vulnerable populations in Birmingham with 20 other fellows. Presently, she is a consultant to the UAB School of Dentistry for oral health initiatives to improve the oral health outcomes of vulnerable populations of children, youth and adults. In 2011, Ms. Johns was admitted to the inaugural class of the newly established JCCEO Center of Excellence in Early Childhood. Ms. Johns lives in Birmingham with her husband, Keith, wonderful son, Eric and a fat cat, Jake. She is passionate about using her experiences and energy to improve the inner workings of her hometown and the state of Alabama and to leave a better future for children in Alabama.
