2013 Alumna of the Year - Keecha Harris, DrPH, RD

Keecha Harris, DrPH, RD is principal of KHA Inc, a national public health consultancy. She leads the planning, technical assistance, and evaluations of publicly and privately funded efforts across a broad range of topics for diverse clients such as the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, General Mills Foundation, and the Community Food and Nutrition Program of the Department of Health and Human Services. Recently, she co-facilitated a learning community of public and private funders in the Southeast to identify opportunities for impact investment.  She also led a group focused on community health enterprise and social investments for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work. 

Currently Dr. Harris is working with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, My Marshall, and Schwan’s to develop a community wellness initiative partnership with local businesses. Her firm has been retained to facilitate the planning and evaluation of a national philanthropic effort to reduce obesity and diabetes among Native American children. It is also conducting the 40-year retrospective evaluation of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s $1.4 billion technical assistance investments. Previously, she was a nutrition columnist for www.msn.com and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A dedicated volunteer, Dr. Harris serves as the recording secretary for the Southeastern Health Equity Council; trustee on the grants and finance committees of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation; ambassador for the National Dairy Council; national advisory board member for Girls Inc.; executive team member for the Spelman College Parent and Family Association; advisory board member for the Alys Stephens Center for Performing Arts; and Birmingham city representative for GirlTrek, a national walking initiative aimed at inspiring black women and girls to lead their healthiest lives.

 Harris received her masters and doctorate of public health degrees from UAB and is also an alumnus of Iowa State University and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She has been honored as a German Marshall Memorial Fellow, W.K. Kellogg Foundation Food and Society Fellow, Birmingham Business Journal Top 40 Under 40, Recognized Young Dietitian for The Academy, and a distinguished alumnus of Iowa State University.
