Jonghwa Oh, PhD, MPH

Assistant Professor
Ryals 524B

Dr. Oh received a MS (2008) in Environmental Engineering from Yonsei University in Korea, with a focus on noise and vibration. She earned a MPH (2012) and PhD (2016) in Environmental Health Sciences (Industrial Hygiene track) from UAB. After graduation with a PhD, she worked as a visiting scientist continuing research on the development of a novel air sampling and analysis method and as an instructor teaching core Industrial Hygiene courses, in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at UAB (2016-2018).

Dr. Oh's main research area is improving the current occupational exposure assessment methods. Her IH research group has been developing an innovative VOC pre-analysis technique, photothermal desorption which uses light energy to directly desorb an analyte from a sorption material, which enables to save time and cost for exposure assessments, consequently benefiting workers' health. A variety of nano/micro sorption materials have been examined and current focus is on the development of environment friendly, biomass-derived sorption materials. Her other main research topic is prototyping customized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety eyewear and respirators using 3D technology, resulting in better-fitted PPE for workers' protection. In addition, she is interested in noise and vibration exposure assessment and control.
