Lisa Schwiebert announced 2015's Sam Builder's

Sam Brown Bridge Builder Award 2015

The 2015 recipient of the Sam Brown Bridge Builder Award is Lisa Schwiebert, PhD, a professor in the Department of Developmental and Integrative Biology.  This prestigious award recognizes a UAB faculty or staff member who has a deep and abiding commitment to facilitating collaboration and partnerships across campus in ways that enhance the research and teaching activities of the university.

“As a faculty member and an administrator, she has and continues to build bridges across campus through her efforts to expand and deepen career development opportunities for trainees at UAB” says Dr. Jim Collawn, who nominated Dr. Schwiebert.  Beginning in 2003 as an Assistant Professor she initiated discussions with the School of Business for the development of the ‘MBA for Scientists Program’.  This innovative program allowed newly graduated PhD students in the sciences to enter a ‘fast-track’ MBA Program here at UAB; it has since evolved into the Business Entrepreneurship Certificate Program.

According to Dr. Wendy Gunther-Canada, Professor and Chair of Government, “From our first meeting to organize the Science and the Public Career Summit, it was evident that Lisa is passionate about breaking down silos at UAB in order to make connections and collaborate across campus. Her energy and enthusiasm for 'cross-fertilizing' ideas among departments on both ends of campus is refreshing.  For example, faculty from not only the College of Arts and Sciences, but also from the Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine participated in the organizing committee for the Science and the Public Career Summit”.

Lisa is a tireless advocate for trainees and faculty across campus and has led a diverse team of faculty to organize the UAB Mentoring Academy.  She first launched this event in 2012 in response to the mentoring needs of new and junior faculty from across campus.

“Her willingness to collaborate across school and departmental lines is also seen in the manner in which she leads the Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE)”, says Dr. Karen Meneses, Professor and Associate Dean of Nursing.  As an example and early in her tenure as its Associate Dean, Lisa re-structured the Council on Postdoctoral Education (COPE), which provides guidance to the OPE, with dean-appointed representatives from each professional school that trains postdoctoral fellows. Her efforts to promote such campus-wide representation demonstrate her dedication to the UAB community.  Through her role in the OPE, she has developed and teaches a year-round, team-based learning curriculum in professional development. This curriculum brings together faculty from multiple professional schools to instruct courses in grant writing, lab management, translational science, and career development for the benefit of graduate students and postdocs campus-wide.

UAB  is proud to present this award to Dr. Schweibert for her efforts which embody the spirit and character of Dr. Sam Brown.
